A Cookie Cutter Christmas Hallmark

Details

Christie Reynolds (Erin Krakow) and Penny Miller (Miranda Frigon) were childhood pals up until that infamous Christmas recital in which they, at age eight, tried to upstage each other during their duet of "Silent Night." Today, in Greenville, both Christie and Penny are elementary school teachers molding the minds of the young and sticking it to each other whenever they can. Walks into Christie's classroom new student Lily Thompson who lost her mom a year back. As played by Genea Charpentier, Lily is sweet and adorable. And when Christie and Penny set eyes on Lily's handsome widower dad, oboy...

Who knows, ultimately, why Christie decided to partake in the inaugural Teacher Christmas Cookie Bake-Off? It's a soup of reasons. No doubt it's to win the cash prize to afford a field trip for her class. But maybe it's also because Penny is competing. And maybe Christie wants to impress James, the widower dad (David Haydn-Jones). Except she is a horrible, horrible cook. Flies come to her kitchen to commit suicide.

Let's see how many boxes we can tick off the Hallmark Channel movie checklist. Sad widower raising a lovable child? Check. Small town of which Christmas festival is the year's most anticipated event? Check. The female lead who pines for the same true love that her parents experienced? Check. See, I like all that stuff. The Hallmark Channel is like my safety blanket. There's comfort in the warm sense of familiarity that Hallmark brings, especially come the holiday season.

Erin Krakow, striking beauty, holds the screen well. She's fun. I've enjoyed her in Chance at Romance (2013) and I look forward to Season 2 of When Calls the Heart. Krakow - a name that should've been a sound effect in the 1960's Batman television series - is steady on as a character torn between good intentions - Christie genuinely cares about Lily and her other students - and her ongoing mission to best her mortal enemy in, well, anything. I love the disgusted/put upon/mortified expressions that cross her face whenever a Penny-centric situation surfaces (my fave is the look on Christie's face when she drives over to check out Penny's much vaunted snow globe lawn decoration).

Miranda Frigon's soulless ginger is someone you love to hate, like Peg from Married with Children or Doris Roberts from Everybody Loves Raymond. I only wish the rivalry had escalated to an even more epic scale. And maybe there could've been a wee bit more chemistry between Krakow and Haydn-Jones (I blame him; he's a bit stiff). I prefer the scenes between Krakow and child actress Charpentier. I also wish that Alan Thicke - here as the food judge - had indulged in scathing Simon Cowell-like denouncements. As it is, all he does is grunt stuff and take small nibbles of the competitive cookies (probably he was concerned about having to do a ton of takes). Another quibble is that the cookies could've looked more sumptuous instead of something my aunt with the arthritis and the egg-phobia would bake.

A Cookie Cutter Christmas is appropriate for young audiences. It serves up a cute, sometimes comic holiday flick with an engaging lead actress and a cute kid who, thank goodness, isn't a brat and a string of petty oneupmanship by bitter frenemies who, by the end, are infused with the Christmas Hallmark spirit. And don't even nag about that being a spoiler. It's Hallmark, for cripes' sake.

And, for me, if nothing else, I picked up some tips on how to - and how NOT to - bake cookies

A Perfect Spy BBC Series

Details

A Perfect Spy is a captivating, straight-ahead adaptation of John Le Carré's novel about the development of a Cold War double agent, Magnus Pym, whose life since childhood has taught him the art and elements of deceit. Peter Egan (Bean: The Movie) plays the adult Pym, raised in part by his con-man father, Rick (Ray McAnally), and the latter's community of accomplices. Stranded in Vienna while working an angle for Rick that goes wrong, young Magnus (Benedict Taylor) makes a connection with a down-on-his-luck writer, Axel (Rudinger Weigang). That relationship will come back to haunt him when Axel--later a Communist spy--recruits Magnus to divide his loyalties between East and West. Typical of a Le Carré drama, the role of nature versus nurture in the spy business is a complex and fascinating mystery. Magnus has always been a talented liar--it was part of his survival in childhood--and seems most comfortable infiltrating others' secrets and tempting danger. But he is slowly and effortlessly outsmarted by those who know how to maneuver a man into a corner before he realizes he has run out of options. The cast of this 1988 British television miniseries is the best thing about the production, especially McAnally (My Left Foot), who died the following year What traits of nature and nurture go into the making of a master of deception? British agent Magnus Pym’s training begins in a chaotic childhood. His charismatic con man father trades secrets for love, bouncing in and out of jail and his son’s life. Schooled at Oxford and mentored by two masters of espionage, Magnus is poised for greatness—except that his mentors are on opposite sides of the battle. 3 Discs 374 Minutes

A Touch Of Cloth Season 3

Details

A Touch of Cloth is a parody of British detective and crime dramas, with the plot based on a story by Messiah novelist Boris Starling. An all-encompassing parody of every police procedural ever written. It stars John Hannah (The Mummy, Spartacus) as DCI Jack Cloth - a maverick, heavy drinking loner who has thrown himself into his work following the mysterious death of his wife. The damaged, haunted Cloth is teamed with plucky no-nonsense bisexual sidekick DC Anne Oldman, played by Suranne Jones (Coronation Street, Unforgiven). Together the pair investigate a series of increasingly grisly murders and find themselves on the trail of a devious killer. As you do. If you're a detective. Too Cloth For Comfort Parts 1 and 2.

A Woman Of Substance Trilogy

Details

A trilogy of substance. 3 Barbara Taylor Bradford books adapted to mini-series, now a complete epic. In bonus film of the author, she praises adaptations, she always influenced content, and her husband produced 2 & 3. "It was faithful to the book."--BTB. Bradford said Jenny Seagrove was indeed the young Emma she envisioned. Long novels, therefore some cutting. What's left is great British drama of not a women's libber, but a driven woman successful in a man's business world.

Cast is stellar. Jenny Seagrove is flawless as young Emma in #1, then Gr-daughter Paula in #2. Deborah Kerr is 1980s Emma in #1 & #2 (her last performance ever). Diane Baker played Laura, but was the force behind the series' start. Biggest surprise is Liam Neeson a new face in his 30s, as Blackie, lifetime lover/friend to Emma. He was as good then as he is today. Meg Wynn Owen (Upstairs, Downstairs), Peter Chelsom, Steven Collins, James Brolin, Claire Bloom (King's Speech), Christopher Cazenove, Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Monarch of the Glen), Bionic Lindsay Wagner, Anthony Hopkins...well, many & more.

A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE-3 episodes In 1905 young Emma is maid at Fairley Hall, Squire (Peter Egan), alcoholic Mrs (Nicola Pagett) & 1 good son (Chelsom), 1 bad (Christopher Gable). Builder Blackie (Leeson) arrives for repairs meeting Emma, who's Ma (Meg Wynn Owen) is seriously ill. There are secrets, ambition and love to encounter. In ep 2 Emma leaves facing problems & new beginning. 1906 moves through arson, a rapid business climb, WWI and Emma makes a shrewd mill purchase for war garments. Ep 3 Widow Emma inherits more property as wounded brother (Mick Ford) returns. Death, financial gain, remarriage, & Emma's hatred of Fairley's cultivates in surprises in lusts of love, money, & power. War ends. Personal battles grow. Love rendezvous, disaster, WW2 and a 1980s attempted business takeover.

HOLD THE DREAM-2 episodes Kerr in a larger role, Seagrove in a new, with other family returning but played by new actors. Neeson is an older Blackie, still perfection in the role. He competes with Kerr & Seagrove as show anchors. A new generation of affairs, business tycoons, Harte-Fairley feud. 1980s loves lost as fast as new lusts begin. Worldwide business managed by Emma's grands. Gran-Paula (Seagrove) becomes an Emma clone, including marital issues. Matriarch Emma mellows. Who can hold another's dream? Business gets physically rougher.

TO BE THE BEST-2 episodes Paula (now Lindsay Wagner) continues taking on a modern business world. Competition becomes violent and deadly. Players in this game are in London, Hong Kong, NY, & Indiana (rudely misrepresented as a mix of a southern/Country Western state) about 1990. International intrigue within family lines, high finance garnished w2ith adultery. A dramatic contemporary change from Emma's quaint beginning.

Adams Chronicles Mini Series Historical Drama

Details

Produced by PBS as part of the American Bicentennial celebration in 1976, this superb 13 hour television film chronicles the lives of four generations of the illustrious Adams family. It depicts approximately 150 years - from 1750 to 1900 - in the saga of this family whose history is nearly synonymous with that of the difficult birth and adolescence of the American republic. Central to this sprawling tale are the lives of four Adams men: the patriarch John Adams, the second president of the United States, his son John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, his son Charles Francis Adams, an Ambassador to Great Britain during the era of the Civil War, and his son, the historian Henry Adams. Because the family inevitably participated in the central events of their time, especially during the era of the Revolution and shortly thereafter, the series becomes a splendid, often probing depiction of America's early years. Featuring superb acting, wonderful period sets and costumes and, most importantly, truly stellar writing, this may arguably be the finest miniseries, along with the still unreleased Oppenheimer starring Sam Waterston, that American television has ever produced.

George Grizzard portrays John Adams from youth to old age. He is splendid, as is William Daniels who portrays John Quincy from ages 50 to 81. Daniels is no stranger to portraying Adams's having played John Adams in the film of the musical 1776. David Birney portrays John Quincy Adams from ages 36 to 48. John Beal plays Charles Francis Adams and Peter Brandon plays Henry Adams. John Houseman reprises his Paper Chase crotchety attorney role as the irrascible Justice Gridley, John Adam's early legal mentor. The series depicts all of the founding fathers, doing so with humanity and very few marble bust performances. The women of the Adams family are portrayed with sensitivity and subtlety, averting the temptation of allowing them to become mere cyphers. Kathryn Walker and Leora Dana play Abigail Adams from her youth to her death, both actresses portraying John Adams' beloved wife with warmth, gentle humor, keen intelligence and stunning emotional depth. Her character's portrayal is crucial to the success of this series and they acquit it with grace and style. All of the many performances are exemplary in their own unique ways. It is gratifying that this series is finally available on DVD. If you enjoy historical drama and/or American history, then you will certainly enjoy this superb series. Most strongly recommended. 4 Discs

Agatha Christie's Curtain: Poirot's The Last Case

Details

A specific person is unsuspected by police or family of the victims of involvement in five previous murders, in all of which there was a clear suspect. Four of these suspects have since died (one of them hanged); in the case of Freda Clay, who gave her aunt an overdose of morphine, there was too little evidence to prosecute. Poirot calls the recently widowed Hastings to join him in solving this case. Poirot alone sees the pattern of involvement. Poirot, using a wheelchair due to arthritis, and attended by his new valet Curtiss, will not share the name of the previously unsuspected person, using X instead. X is among the guests at Styles Court with them. The old house is a guest hotel under new owners, Colonel and Mrs Luttrell. The guests know each other, with this gathering initiated when Sir William Boyd-Carrington invites the Franklins to join him for a summer holiday stay. The five prior murders took place in the area, among people known to this group.

He leaves Hastings three clues: a copy of Othello, a copy of John Ferguson (a 1915 play by St. John Greer Ervine), and a note to speak to his longtime valet, Georges. Four months after Poirot's death, Hastings receives a manuscript in which Poirot explains all

His last wish for Hastings is typical for Poirot, the matchmaker: he suggests that Hastings should pursue Elizabeth Cole.

Agatha Christie's Thirteen At Dinner

Details

Lady Edgeware (played by Faye Dunaway) is estranged from her husband and wants a divorce. If she can't have a divorce, she says she'll just have to kill him. Shortly after making this pronouncement, Lord Edgeware is murdered. Lord Edgeware's servants testify that Lady Edgeware drove up to the home in a cab, walked into Lord Edgeware's study, and left after a brief period of time in the study. Shortly afterward, the servants find Lord Edgeware dead in his study. This is as true-to-life a murder scenario as ever came from the pen of Agatha Christie. In 27 years of prosecuting and defending murder cases, I've had several that followed this plotline. But Christie isn't going to allow things to be that simple. It seems that twelve unimpeachable witnesses are all prepared to testify that Lady Edgeware was with them at a formal dinner at exactly the time of the murder. Poirot finally unravels the mystery, and in the denouement proves quite satisfying.

Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None (BBC 2015)

Details

They've made a proper job of this. And then you get to the performances. Brilliant. Not a weak moment, and nothing even vaguely approaching 'good' -it's far beyond that. They all layer in depth and detail to their characters to an astonishing degree. With a cast of this caliber, you would expect quality, but they've given it everything. It would be criminal to single out any one of them in a superlative ensemble. With one exception. Charles Dance, who has put in what has to be his finest work to date. It takes something very special to stand out amongst a group of this caliber, and he does.

Douglas Booth and Charles Dance star in this three-part BBC adaptation of the classic crime novel by Agatha Christie. When ten strangers are invited to stay on an isolated island off the Devonshire coast, they find that the owners, Mr and Mrs Owen, are nowhere to be seen. As, gradually, each member of the party is killed, the remaining holidaymakers become increasingly suspicious of their fellow islanders...

On a hot day in late August sometime in the late 1930s eight people, all strangers to each other, are invited to a small, isolated island off the coast of Devon, England, by a "Mr and Mrs. Owen". They settle in at a mansion tended by two newly hired servants, Thomas and Ethel Rogers, but their hosts are absent. When the guests sit down to dinner, they notice the centerpiece, ten figurines of soldiers in a circle. Afterward, Thomas Rogers puts on a gramophone record, from which a voice accuses them all of murder.[4] Shortly after this, one of the party dies from poisoning, and after this more and more people are murdered, all in methods synonymous with a nursery rhyme the island is named after.[5] The murderer removes a figurine from the dining table each time someone is killed. All this time, the survivors race against time to find out who the killer is, and if he or she is one of them. 3 Hours 3 Episodes.

Agatha Christie: The Case of the Discontented Soldier

Details

With the holy intervention of Mr.Parker Pyne, a retired major finds love and adventure helping a young lady to find a very precious African treasure. Major Charles Wilbraham calls at Parker Pyne’s office. He has recently returned after many years in the service of the Empire in East Africa and is retired. As Pyne instantly concludes, he is bored stiff living in an English village after a lifetime of excitement and adventure. Pyne charges him fifty pounds and instructs him to take Madeleine de Sara to lunch. She returns a few hours later unsuccessful: she has frightened the Major off, as he thinks her something of a vamp; his tastes run to fair-haired, blue-eyed women. Pyne consults a list and decides that Freda Clegg will be suitable... The next day Wilbraham receives note from Pyne instructing him to go to an address in Friar’s Lane, Hampstead and call at a house named "Eaglemont." In Friar’s Lane, Wilbraham hears cries for help and going into an empty house sees a young blond-haired, blue-eyed woman being attacked by two black men. He fights them off and takes the young lady for a coffee to help her get over her attack. She tells her story: her name is Freda Clegg and she is an orphan. The previous week she received a visit from an Australian lawyer who told her she might come into a legacy from business transacted by her late father but that it was dependent upon her having some papers of his. She handed him all of the papers she has, having no idea what the matter could be about and then received a letter from him asking her to call on him at his house, "Whitefriars" in Friar’s Lane – the empty house, and it was there she was attacked and Wilbraham saved her. The Major’s theory is that there is something in her father’s papers that the man posing as a lawyer wants desperately. Freda remembers that she thought her room had been searched when she was out and that this attack was possibly to take such papers by force from Freda if she had them on her person, or to force her to tell where they are.
