12 Years A Slave

Details

Winner of an Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the year.

Based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom.

In 1842, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free African American man working as a skilled carpenter and fiddle player, and living with his wife and two children in Saratoga Springs, New York Two men (Scoot McNairy and Taran Killam) offer him a two-week job as a musician, but they drug Northup and he wakes up in chains, about to be sold into slavery.

Northup is shipped to New Orleans, and is renamed "Platt", the identity of a runaway slave from Georgia. Beaten repeatedly, he is ultimately purchased by plantation owner William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch). Northup manages to stay on good terms with Ford, a relatively benevolent master. Northup engineers a waterway for transporting logs swiftly and cost-effectively downstream, and Ford presents him with a violin in gratitude. Carpenter John Tibeats (Paul Dano) resents Northup, and begins verbally harassing him. The tensions between Tibeats and Northup escalate; Tibeats attacks Northup, and Northup fights back. In retaliation, Tibeats and his friends attempt to lynch Northup, who suffers many hours in the noose. Ford explains that in order to save Northrup's life he must be sold to Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). Northup attempts to reason with Ford, explaining that he is actually a free man. Ford states that he "cannot hear this" and responds "he has a debt to pay" on Northup's purchase price.

Epps believes his right to abuse his slaves is biblically sanctioned. The slaves must pick at least 200 pounds of cotton every day, or be beaten. A young female slave named Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o) daily picks over 500 pounds and is praised lavishly by Epps, who also repeatedly rapes her. Epps' wife (Sarah Paulson) is envious of her and frequently humiliates and attacks her.

Epps decides that the new slaves have caused an outbreak of cotton worm, a plague sent by God. He leases them to a neighboring plantation for the season. While there, Northup gains the favor of the plantation's owner, who gives him a coin after he plays the fiddle at a wedding anniversary celebration. When Northup returns to Epps, he attempts to use the money to pay a white field hand and former overseer (Garret Dillahunt) to mail a letter to Northup's friends in New York. The field hand agrees to deliver the letter and takes the money, but betrays Northup. Northup is narrowly able to convince Epps that the story is a lie. Northup tearfully burns the letter, his only hope of freedom.

Patsey's abuse worsens as Epps continues to force himself on her. Patsey wishes to die and asks Northup to kill her; he refuses. One day, Epps becomes enraged after discovering Patsey missing from his plantation. When she returns, she reveals she was gone to get a bar of soap from Mistress Shaw (Alfre Woodard), having become sick from her own stench as a result of being forbidden soap by Mary Epps. Epps orders her stripped and tied to a post. Encouraged by his wife, Epps forces Northup to whip Patsey. Northup reluctantly obeys but Epps eventually takes the whip away from Northup, savagely lashing her.

Northup begins working on the construction of a gazebo with a Canadian laborer named Bass (Brad Pitt). Bass earns Epps' displeasure by expressing his opposition to slavery, but this convinces Northup to confide in Bass about his kidnapping. Once again, Northup asks for help in getting a letter to Saratoga Springs. Bass, risking his life, agrees to do that. One day Northup is called over by the local sheriff, who arrives in a carriage with another man. The sheriff asks Northrup a series of questions to match him with the facts of his life in New York. Northup recognizes the sheriff's companion as a shopkeeper he knows from Saratoga. The man has come to free him, and the two embrace. Though Epps resists and Patsey is distraught, Northup leaves immediately.

After being enslaved for 12 years, Northup is restored to freedom and returned to his family. Concluding credits recount the inability of Northup and his legal counsel to prosecute the men responsible for his being sold into slavery, as well as the mystery surrounding details of Northup's death and burial.

42 (Jackie Robinson Story)

Details

The film tells the story of Jackie Robinson and, under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey, Robinson's signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers to become the first African-American player to break the baseball color barrier. The story focuses mostly on the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers season and somewhat on Robinson's 1946 season with the Montreal Royals. In 1945, Jackie Robinson and his team, the Kansas City Monarchs, stop by a gas station. When the attendant refuses Robinson entry to the washroom, Robinson says they will find another station at which to fill up the team bus, and the attendant relents. As Robinson comes out, a scout for the Dodgers approaches him and sends him to Brooklyn. He is offered a $600/month contract and $3,500 signing bonus, which Robinson accepts after being warned he must control his temper if he wants to play. Robinson proposes to his girlfriend, Rachel, by phone and she accepts. During Dodgers spring training, Robinson makes it to the franchise farm team in Montreal. After a great season there and spring training in Panama, he advances to the Dodgers. Most of the team soon signs a petition stating they refuse to play with Robinson, but manager Leo Durocher insists Robinson will play. Durocher is then suspended, leaving the Dodgers without a manager. In a game against the Philadelphia Phillies, manager Ben Chapman taunts Robinson, causing him to go back to the dugout and smash his bat to vent his anger. With encouragement from Rickey, Robinson then returns to the field and hits a single, steals second and third base, and scores the winning run. When Chapman's behavior toward Robinson generates bad press for the team, the Phillies' owner requires him to pose with Robinson for newspapers and magazine photos. Later, Robinson's teammate, Pee Wee Reese, comes to understand the pressure Robinson is facing, and makes a public show of solidarity, standing with his arm around Robinson's shoulders before a hostile crowd in Cincinnati. 128 minutes

A Walk Among The Tombstones (Liam Neeson)

Details

A walk among the Tombstones movie is a thriller that has been written and directed by Scott Frank. The lead actors of this movie are Dan Stevens, Liam Nesson, Boyd Holbrook and David Harbor. The story of this movie revolves around Matthew Scudder who is a private investigator. He has been hired by drug kingpin to find out about the truth of kidnapping and murder of the drug kingpin wide death. This movie is based on the bestselling series of the mystery novels by Lawrence Block. A walk among the Tombstones movie is a must watch for people who loves thriller and I really enjoyed watching this movie myself as there are many interesting twists and turns to the movie.

The lead actor of the movie played by Liam Nesson is known as Matthew Scudder is an ex NYPD cop. He works as an unlicensed private investigator that operates outside law. When he agrees reluctantly to help one heroin trafficker played by Dan Stevens he was assigned the task of finding the culprit who has committed the crime. But when he was finding the men who have kidnapped and then brutally murdered the wife of the heroin trafficker, he came to know the whole truth about their twisted crime. The cause of his wife death is because the heroin trafficker haggles with the price of ransom and the lead actors has been given the task of solving the mystery. He also came to about the fact that these men will carry on committing these kinds of crimes. He wanted to make the lines between right and wrong more blur and thus he strived harder to catch the culprits through backstreets of New York before their repeat their crimes and go on a killing spree again.

A walk among the Tombstones movie has been filmed on the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn which has many visuals that will surely entice you. The private investigator takes the help of his friend Scudder who is an ex cop, drug lords, streetwise punk and two computer geniuses.

All of these men together were successful in tracking down the killers through the streets of New York. Though A walk among the Tombstones movie has been based on the novel by Lawrence Block by the same name, you will really love the movie as mystery and thrill unfolds every moment. The surprise element of the movie is the search for the criminals through the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn where the private investigator goes in search of the psychotics. If you are interested in watching the movie in HD then you will need to get the access to the site so that you can enjoy watching the movie in High definition. The actor Liam Nesson did a condemnable job as he has re branded himself as a superstar with great acting skills. This movie has gained a higher level than many other films in the thriller genre and every part of the movie adds more character and substances to the whole story line and plot of the movie.

A Woman Of Substance Trilogy

Details

A trilogy of substance. 3 Barbara Taylor Bradford books adapted to mini-series, now a complete epic. In bonus film of the author, she praises adaptations, she always influenced content, and her husband produced 2 & 3. "It was faithful to the book."--BTB. Bradford said Jenny Seagrove was indeed the young Emma she envisioned. Long novels, therefore some cutting. What's left is great British drama of not a women's libber, but a driven woman successful in a man's business world.

Cast is stellar. Jenny Seagrove is flawless as young Emma in #1, then Gr-daughter Paula in #2. Deborah Kerr is 1980s Emma in #1 & #2 (her last performance ever). Diane Baker played Laura, but was the force behind the series' start. Biggest surprise is Liam Neeson a new face in his 30s, as Blackie, lifetime lover/friend to Emma. He was as good then as he is today. Meg Wynn Owen (Upstairs, Downstairs), Peter Chelsom, Steven Collins, James Brolin, Claire Bloom (King's Speech), Christopher Cazenove, Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Monarch of the Glen), Bionic Lindsay Wagner, Anthony Hopkins...well, many & more.

A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE-3 episodes In 1905 young Emma is maid at Fairley Hall, Squire (Peter Egan), alcoholic Mrs (Nicola Pagett) & 1 good son (Chelsom), 1 bad (Christopher Gable). Builder Blackie (Leeson) arrives for repairs meeting Emma, who's Ma (Meg Wynn Owen) is seriously ill. There are secrets, ambition and love to encounter. In ep 2 Emma leaves facing problems & new beginning. 1906 moves through arson, a rapid business climb, WWI and Emma makes a shrewd mill purchase for war garments. Ep 3 Widow Emma inherits more property as wounded brother (Mick Ford) returns. Death, financial gain, remarriage, & Emma's hatred of Fairley's cultivates in surprises in lusts of love, money, & power. War ends. Personal battles grow. Love rendezvous, disaster, WW2 and a 1980s attempted business takeover.

HOLD THE DREAM-2 episodes Kerr in a larger role, Seagrove in a new, with other family returning but played by new actors. Neeson is an older Blackie, still perfection in the role. He competes with Kerr & Seagrove as show anchors. A new generation of affairs, business tycoons, Harte-Fairley feud. 1980s loves lost as fast as new lusts begin. Worldwide business managed by Emma's grands. Gran-Paula (Seagrove) becomes an Emma clone, including marital issues. Matriarch Emma mellows. Who can hold another's dream? Business gets physically rougher.

TO BE THE BEST-2 episodes Paula (now Lindsay Wagner) continues taking on a modern business world. Competition becomes violent and deadly. Players in this game are in London, Hong Kong, NY, & Indiana (rudely misrepresented as a mix of a southern/Country Western state) about 1990. International intrigue within family lines, high finance garnished w2ith adultery. A dramatic contemporary change from Emma's quaint beginning.

A Year With The Bomb Girls Facing The Enemy (2014)

Details

Although the TV series was cancelled this is a new 2 hour movie 2014. "Bomb Girls” has extended one of the most entertaining stealth dramas on television into an engaging two-hour movie. The Bomb Girls are workers at a Canadian munitions plant during World War II. They’re a diverse group whose stories work equally well as soap opera or as exploration of the deeper crises that surface on the home front during wartime. “Facing the Enemy” pokes into the delicate matter of sabotage, at a time when German U-Boats are sinking an unsustainable number of Allied supply ships. Gladys Witham (Jodi Balfour), a woman of privilege who has had to fight for acceptance in the blue-collar world of Victory Munitions, is sent on an undercover mission to find who is sabotaging the sonar detection system. Issues of loyalty and ancestry immediately surface, while Gladys also tries to engineer the return of her best friend Betty (Ali Liebert), who has been the victim of some shady justice herself.

Act Of Valor

Details

Act of Valor aims to capture the experience of Navy SEALs as they combat the schemes of a Chechnyan jihadist who wants to send suicide bombers into American stadiums and shopping malls. Their efforts take them all over the world, from Costa Rica to Somalia to the South Pacific. For added authenticity, eight real Navy SEALs have been cast in the lead roles. In terms of tactics and equipment, Act of Valor is rigorously authentic. What marks this as fantasy is the perfection of the missions (there are no civilian casualties; every sniper takes out his target in a single head shot--there are a lot of exploding heads in this movie) and absolute moral clarity (the wild-eyed jihadist and drug cartel foot soldiers are unquestionably evil; one of the main characters carries his grandfather's folded flag from World War II). The performances of the SEALs, though well intentioned, make you appreciate the complexities of Arnold Schwarzenegger. What's smart about Act of Valor is that it doesn't waste much time with setups or dialogue, but heads straight into the missions. However, much of these missions are filmed like a first-person-shooter video game, which lends a sense of immediacy but undercuts the sense of reality. Still, all in all, Act of Valor is a sincere attempt to express admiration for the men and women risking their lives in the military. 110 minutes

Adams Chronicles Mini Series Historical Drama

Details

Produced by PBS as part of the American Bicentennial celebration in 1976, this superb 13 hour television film chronicles the lives of four generations of the illustrious Adams family. It depicts approximately 150 years - from 1750 to 1900 - in the saga of this family whose history is nearly synonymous with that of the difficult birth and adolescence of the American republic. Central to this sprawling tale are the lives of four Adams men: the patriarch John Adams, the second president of the United States, his son John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, his son Charles Francis Adams, an Ambassador to Great Britain during the era of the Civil War, and his son, the historian Henry Adams. Because the family inevitably participated in the central events of their time, especially during the era of the Revolution and shortly thereafter, the series becomes a splendid, often probing depiction of America's early years. Featuring superb acting, wonderful period sets and costumes and, most importantly, truly stellar writing, this may arguably be the finest miniseries, along with the still unreleased Oppenheimer starring Sam Waterston, that American television has ever produced.

George Grizzard portrays John Adams from youth to old age. He is splendid, as is William Daniels who portrays John Quincy from ages 50 to 81. Daniels is no stranger to portraying Adams's having played John Adams in the film of the musical 1776. David Birney portrays John Quincy Adams from ages 36 to 48. John Beal plays Charles Francis Adams and Peter Brandon plays Henry Adams. John Houseman reprises his Paper Chase crotchety attorney role as the irrascible Justice Gridley, John Adam's early legal mentor. The series depicts all of the founding fathers, doing so with humanity and very few marble bust performances. The women of the Adams family are portrayed with sensitivity and subtlety, averting the temptation of allowing them to become mere cyphers. Kathryn Walker and Leora Dana play Abigail Adams from her youth to her death, both actresses portraying John Adams' beloved wife with warmth, gentle humor, keen intelligence and stunning emotional depth. Her character's portrayal is crucial to the success of this series and they acquit it with grace and style. All of the many performances are exemplary in their own unique ways. Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None (BBC 2015)

Details

They've made a proper job of this. And then you get to the performances. Brilliant. Not a weak moment, and nothing even vaguely approaching 'good' -it's far beyond that. They all layer in depth and detail to their characters to an astonishing degree. With a cast of this caliber, you would expect quality, but they've given it everything. It would be criminal to single out any one of them in a superlative ensemble. With one exception. Charles Dance, who has put in what has to be his finest work to date. It takes something very special to stand out amongst a group of this caliber, and he does.

Douglas Booth and Charles Dance star in this three-part BBC adaptation of the classic crime novel by Agatha Christie. When ten strangers are invited to stay on an isolated island off the Devonshire coast, they find that the owners, Mr and Mrs Owen, are nowhere to be seen. As, gradually, each member of the party is killed, the remaining holidaymakers become increasingly suspicious of their fellow islanders...

On a hot day in late August sometime in the late 1930s eight people, all strangers to each other, are invited to a small, isolated island off the coast of Devon, England, by a "Mr and Mrs. Owen". They settle in at a mansion tended by two newly hired servants, Thomas and Ethel Rogers, but their hosts are absent. When the guests sit down to dinner, they notice the centerpiece, ten figurines of soldiers in a circle. Afterward, Thomas Rogers puts on a gramophone record, from which a voice accuses them all of murder.[4] Shortly after this, one of the party dies from poisoning, and after this more and more people are murdered, all in methods synonymous with a nursery rhyme the island is named after.[5] The murderer removes a figurine from the dining table each time someone is killed. All this time, the survivors race against time to find out who the killer is, and if he or she is one of them. 3 Hours 3 Episodes.

Argo

Details

Militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, in retaliation for the nation's sheltering the recently deposed Shah. More than 50 of the embassy staff are taken as hostages, but six escape and hide in the home of the Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor (Victor Garber). With the escapees' situation kept secret, the US State Department begins to explore options for "exfiltrating" them from Iran. Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), a CIA specialist brought in for consultation, criticizes the proposals. He too is at a loss for an alternative until, inspired at home by watching Battle for the Planet of the Apes on TV with his son, he plans to create a cover story that the escapees are Canadian filmmakers, scouting "exotic" locations in Iran for a similar sci-fi film. Mendez and his supervisor Jack O'Donnell (Bryan Cranston) contact John Chambers (John Goodman), a Hollywood make-up artist who has previously crafted disguises for the CIA. Chambers puts them in touch with the film producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin). Together they set up a phony film studio, publicize their plans, and successfully establish the pretense of developing Argo, a "science fantasy" in the style of Star Wars, to lend credibility to the cover story. Meanwhile, the escapees grow frantic inside the ambassador's residence. The revolutionaries reassemble embassy papers shredded before the takeover and learn that some personnel have escaped.Mendez meets a CIA agent at Istanbul's Haghia Sophia before going to Iran. Posing as a producer for Argo, Mendez enters Iran and links up with the six escapees. He provides them with Canadian passports and fake identities to prepare them to get through security at the airport. Although afraid to trust Mendez's scheme, they reluctantly go along with it, knowing that Mendez is risking his own life too, and convinced that it is their only option. A "scouting" visit to the bazaar to maintain their cover story takes a bad turn, but their Iranian culture contact gets them away from the hostile crowd. Mendez is told that the operation has been cancelled, to avoid conflicting with a planned military rescue of the hostages. He pushes ahead, forcing O'Donnell to hastily re-obtain authorization for the mission to get tickets on a Swissair flight. Tension rises at the airport, where the escapees' flight reservations are confirmed at the last minute, and a guard's call to the supposed studio in Hollywood is answered at the last second. The group boards the plane just as the Iranian guards uncover the ruse. As the 747 taxis down the runway, it is chased unsuccessfully by Iranian police cars. Mendez and the hostages breathe a sigh of relief as the plane leaves Iranian airspace. To protect the hostages remaining in Tehran from retaliation, all US involvement in the rescue is suppressed, giving full credit to the Canadian government and its ambassador (who left Iran with his wife under their own credentials as the operation was underway; their Iranian housekeeper, who had known about the Americans and lied to the revolutionaries to protect them, escaped to Iraq). Mendez is awarded the Intelligence Star, but due to the classified nature of the mission, he would not be able to keep the medal until the details were made public in 1997.

Around The World In 80 Treasures BBC

Details

In this engaging and often surprising travelogue, architectural historian Dan Cruickshank traverses the planet in five months, visiting 34 countries to see 80 of the world’s greatest treasures. Cruickshank’s quest is really to go far beyond the intrinsic value of each profiled treasure to unearth the stories behind them, to see what they have to say about the cultures that created them, and ultimately how they define human civilization. It is a fascinating--and frequently surprising--journey. Some of Cruickshank’s choices are very unexpected, and maybe even controversial (the 1876 Colt revolver pistol, the Volkswagen Beetle), others you’d expect to see here (Machu Picchu). But the treasures themselves are just a starting point. From there Cruickshank enthusiastically advances like a modern day Indiana-Jones-meets-Rick-Steves to learn what it says about the society that created it, whether it’s an ancient stone statue on Easter Island, or a chair designed by a 20th century Bauhaus artist. The breadth and diversity of the achievements is astounding to see, and Cruickshank’s infectious sense of wonder and curiosity makes this a fun watch. For anyone interested in travel, adventures, world history, art, Around the World in 80 Treasures is a must-see.

Absolutely wonderful, engrossing, engaging and fascinating series! And Dan Cruickshank makes it all the more fun with his quirky personality. I smiled often through this series, and sometimes chuckled loudly at Cruickshank being Cruickshank - like the way he lowers his voice and urgently whispers into the camera when he is really excited about a piece of history he is relaying.

But most importantly, this man knows his stuff! He has a very unique take on things, selecting wonderful treasures that I had never even heard of, but am now anxious to visit, along with some of the more expected ones we are all familiar with. Yet even the familiar ones are made more interesting with new information and facts, or areas that Dan shows us that we would never get to see. He had amazing access, and when he didn't, such as in The People's Republic of China, he shares his frustration at the government's machinations, and political correctness be damned! Wonderful!

In some cases, such as when he visits NYC, he takes us around to all the places we think he will select, telling us how wonderful they are, just to then exclaim, "but that's not my treasure!" And when he gets to the treasure, through his description, pointing out details that most of us would never notice, you come to understand, and agree, with his choice. Staying with NYC as an example, he exclaims that of course skyscrapers are treasures of the world, and NYC is renowned for them, so he must pick a skyscraper. We then see him in front of first, the Empire State Building, then the Chrysler Building, and finally at his treasure, The Seagrams Building! That boring, rectangular thing, one might think. But he goes on to explain that it was designed by Mies van der Rohe, and points out the attention to detail and wonderful design features that even a design professional (like me) would normally overlook.

The skyscraper is not typical of his treasures though. Most are wild and wonderful ancient places, as other reviewers have noted. Get this video, and enjoy! 10 Hours 5 Discs

As Time Goes By BBC Complete Series and specials

Details

Once upon a time, a dashing young British Army officer and a lovely student nurse fell deeply, magically in love. Then he was shipped off to Korea and they never heard from one another. Forty years later, fate brings them together again... with hilarious results. From the first moment Jean and Lionel meet again to the wedding of Alistair and Judith, all the classic moments are here for fans to enjoy.

Every series of British sitcom As Time Goes By is an astonishing pleasure. Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer star as Jean and Lionel, two long-ago sweethearts who fell out of touch during the Korean War, then--due to a chance re-meeting--rekindled their romance in their late middle age. Series 6 mostly revolves around Jean's reluctantly retiring from her business, along with the stumbling romance of her daughter Judith (Moira Brooks) and their friend Alistair (Philip Bretherton, particularly strong this series). The plots of the show are often gossamer-thin--one entire episode revolves around circumventing the nosiness of Jean's sister--but it doesn't matter. The rapport between Dench and Palmer holds a treasure trove of alternating comfort and prickliness. It only takes a half-finished sentence and a disgruntled look to be screamingly funny. They're as attuned to each other as dancers; their waltz through As Time Goes By is a pleasure to behold.

The two specials will be sent free with purchase of Season 9, the last season. Each Season is $12. All 9 seasons plus the Compilation Special and the Reunion Special are $100.

Spencer starts working for a financial advisor, helping sign and mentor his younger friends still in the NFL, while Charles gets a job at a car dealership. Meanwhile, a mistake may cost Green Bay Packers wide receiver Ricky Jerret his roster spot when he's involved in an altercation at a nightclub.

2

"Raise Up"

Spencer struggles to sign Vernon as a client when he clashes with his childhood friend Reggie who handles all his money. Meanwhile, Jason works to renegotiate a contract extension for Vernon with the Dallas Cowboys, but has difficulties. During practice with his new Dolphins team, Ricky discovers that a teammate is not only unfriendly with him but is wearing his number. Now a struggling car salesman, Charles begins to wonder if he retired too early.

3

"Move the Chains"

Spencer and Joe ask their boss, Mr. Anderson for permission to use his yacht to host a corporate event to entice potential clients. After a locker room prank goes too far, Ricky discovers the real reason his teammate, Alonzo has it out for him. Charles grows bored with retirement and remembers his gridiron glory days. Meanwhile at the party, Spencer and Reggie's rivalry reaches a boiling point when he tries to ruin his hospitality by insulting Spencer's upbringing of being adopted.

4

"Heads Will Roll"

In the aftermath of the corporate party, Joe struggles with a hangover and attempting to woo new clients on Mr. Anderson's yacht. Spencer is pressured to see a neurologist regarding his recurrent episodes from a TBI, while handling the conflict Reggie generates around Vernon's contract negotiations. Jason's dealings with the Dallas Cowboys bring in impressive figures that aren't enough for Reggie, and Vernon's inflated ego, and this puts Spencer on the line with their business and personal relationships. Also, Charles is bombarded by constant "sexting" from a woman he doesn't remember from the party.

5

"Machete Charge"

Spencer begrudgingly comes to Vernon's aid when he is targeted by a woman looking to blackmail him with some incriminating photos during the corporate event. However, her lawyer Maximo Gomez tells Joe his client wants a half million dollar pay-off. Meanwhile, Charles' marriage is on the rocks after Julie finds a picture of a nude woman on his cell phone, which he emailed to himself. On the advice of Annabella, Ricky tries to find common ground with Alonzo by taking him and his brothers to a strip club—his treat. But their spending gets out of hand and he comes up with a crazy plan to put a stop to it.

6

"Everything Is Everything"

Dealing with his own mental and financial problems, Spencer tries to balance Vernon and Ricky's issues, while Charles goes to Ricky's "funhouse" to escape the stress of his marriage. In order to drive Maximo's client, Angela Lee's price down, Joe negotiates with him on common ground at a horseracing track. Also, Ricky bears it all about the story behind his jersey number and his non-existent father during an interview with TV host Jay Glazer. Later, Spencer finally gives in to Tracy's concerns and gets an MRI.

7

"Ends"

Spencer decides to take the hit for Vernon by offering up his own money to pay off Angela Lee into not releasing the photos. But when he and Joe meet Maximo to hand him the money, there's a catch. Life without Annabella is hard on Ricky, who flies off the handle in public again. Jason meets his mother's new young golfer boyfriend and thinks he is scamming her in order to represent him as his agent. Later, Spencer and Charles say goodbye to Rodney and spread his ashes onto his high school's football field.

8

"Gaslighting"

Spencer must face up to his past with Angela Lee in order to save Vernon's future, and agrees to meet with her. Seeing the error of his promiscuous ways, Ricky tries to win back Bella, thinking a $400,000 "I'm sorry" ring will do it. Meanwhile, Charles puts his football skills to work at the car dealership when co-workers and customers bet he can't move an SUV in neutral. Also, Mr. Anderson gets a hold of the corporate event video and suspends Joe, who makes a permanent commitment to start his own financial firm.

9

"Head-On"

As Vernon's scandal gets cleared up, he learns about a negative incident involving Reggie. Joe reaches out to Mr. Anderson in vain and thinks he and Spencer should walk out on him. Spencer wrecks his car to try and make amends with a former player from his past. Ricky has a motivational video made for Charles, causing him to get back into football.

10

"Flamingos"

Spencer walks into his office finding his co-workers swarming, Joe's office destroyed (by Joe himself), and his office emptied. Spencer then is introduced to his new and considerably better office by Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson offers Spencer the lead role in the office's sports division, which has received a hefty 5 million dollar upgrade. Spencer feels odd because he doesn't want to turn on Joe but is given no choice but to accept.

Vernon turns down the offer to his mega deal. Ricky's father approaches Ricky at camp. Spencer talks to Joe about Mr. Anderson firing Joe, and about running a company with him. Charles prepares for the new baby and gets called saying he will be a member of the Dolphins this season. Ricky talks to his father about life. Vernon is found by Spencer and Jason taking pictures of Flamingos where they talk about the deal Vernon did not want, but now gets excited about it and Spencer feels it's done. Spencer talks to Mr. Anderson about firing Joe. Charles witnesses the Dolphins camp entrance and gets sick.

Ricky enters extravagantly. Spencer meets Joe in Coral Gables. Joe introduces Spencer many ideas of a new company involving the two. Spencer tells Joe he can't do it. Charles and Ricky enter camp as good teammates but are still unproven. Spencer tells Mr. Anderson he can't work with him without Joe. Spencer tells Joe about the meeting, Joe joins in with Spencer. Banished BBC Series 1

Details

Set in the first penal colony founded by the British in New South Wales in the year 1788, in which the British convicts live alongside their Royal Navy marine guards and their officers. A thousand prisoners are guarded by one hundred men, and with five men for every woman, tensions are high when the women are shared among the men.

1

"Episode 1"

When prisoner Elizabeth Quinn is found in the men's quarters, the rules of the penal colony are tested. The female prisoners are expected to fraternize only with the soldiers and not other prisoners unless they are married; an impossible situation because she and her lover, Tommy Barrett, have spouses back in England. Governor Phillip, to maintain order, agrees to have Barrett hanged and gives the task to Reverend Johnson who will not marry them as he does not sanction the Governor's legal power to divorce the pair.

2

"Episode 2"

Starving James Freeman plots with Tommy Barrett and Elizabeth Quinn to kill the blacksmith to steal his food. The plot goes awry, forcing Barrett to kill the blacksmith in the sleeping quarters before witnesses. The witnesses agree to stay silent. With the body disposed of the Governor cannot hang anybody even though he suspects Freeman. Kitty McVitie, a prisoner who has a protector and lover in Private MacDonald, catches the eye of Major Ross and he offers the Private promotion to Corporal and extra food in exchange for sex with McVitie for two nights a week; with no alternative they agree, but the intervention of the Reverend Johnson meant that the relationship must be platonic.

3

"Episode 3"

Stubbins volunteers to be the new blacksmith to gain remission on his sentence and is being taught to read and write to the consternation of the colony letter writer Letters Molloy. Elizabeth and Barrett's blessing of marriage by the Reverend Johnson at the site of his proposed church is halted by her sickness caused by her pregnancy. The Governor also calls a halt to the building of the church. Major Ross's demands on Kitty McVitie that she should spend three nights a week with him prove too much and in her desire to kill herself the blacksmith's body is discovered; James Freeman flees into the bush.

4

"Episode 4"

McVitie is threatened with a hundred lashes by Major Ross, who takes her suicide attempt as an insult; but intervention by the Reverend Johnson leads to a compromise satisfactory to Ross's desires and the restart of the church construction. Mrs Johnson is given hope for the future by the insight of Anne Meredith. Freeman returns to the colony after a run-in with an escaped prisoner who was thought to be dead, Jefferson. Freeman is sentenced to be hanged and the Governor unsuccessfully canvasses the prisoners for a hangman; finding no volunteer, the Governor has to do it himself, and with Freeman in the noose on the scaffold, offers him a way out.

5

"Episode 5"

The prisoners' suspicions are aroused by Freeman's escape from the hangman's noose, believing he has turned informer; punishable by death at the hands of the prisoners. Major Ross's batman, Mulrooney, is killed by a poisonous snake and Ross uses the death to try to drive a wedge between Kitty McVitie and Corporal MacDonald. A poker game between Timmins, Macdonald, Buckley, Freeman, and Barrett turns nasty when Barrett uses his wife, Elizabeth, as a stake and a truth is revealed about Buckley and Elizabeth.

6

"Episode 6"

Barrett goes berserk and finds Buckley and beats him to near death, placing the governor Phillip in a dilemma with Major Ross demanding Barrett be hanged and the Reverend Johnson pleading leniency. With food supplies dwindling, Ross proposes withdrawing food from the dying and feeding the corpses to the prisoners so that his soldiers can remain fed. Ross convinces Sergeant Timmins that in the event that the Governor should not sentence Barrett to death, then Timmins should arrest the governor. The governor decides to sentence Barrett to death and allows Barrett and his companions to get drunk. Ross's plan to break up McVitie and MacDonald come to fruition when she agrees to having sex with him. Freeman, knowing he will be the hangman and will be killed by the other prisoners, goes to the scaffold and puts the noose around his own neck.

7

"Episode 7"

Kitty McVitie agrees to live with Major Ross despite MacDonald imploring her to marry him. Mrs Johnson enquires if she can take Anne Meredith home to England when she and her husband return, but the truth behind her transportation threatens their friendship. At the hanging of Tommy Barrett, the convicts' plan to turn their backs is thwarted by Major Ross's intervention using MacDonald to kill any prisoner refusing to watch. The governor orders Freeman to do his duty and orders Private Buckley to act as Freeman's bodyguard on pain of his own death. Governor Phillip uses the defiance of the convicts to cut the dwindling rations. 4 Discs

Hailed as “the finest classical actor of North America” (The New York Times), Academy Award-winner Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, Beginners) reprises his Tony Award-winning performance as iconic stage and screen idol John Barrymore in this bold and brilliant tour-de-force film. “Mr. Plummer invests a physically and vocally demanding role with so much passion, pathos and wit that Barrymore becomes a celebration of not just one legendary star, but two” (Rex Reed, The New York Observer). At the height of his remarkable career, John Barrymore was the most celebrated entertainer of his generation. The reigning king of both Broadway and Hollywood, his decline and fall from grace was the tragic result of a self-destructive spiral into vice and excess. And now, with his career in tatters, he makes one final attempt to reclaim his former glory on the stage in this powerful, heartbreaking, humorous and compassionate portrait of a tortured soul and living legend.
