Rush (Australian Crime) 4 Seasons complete

Details

4 Seasons 70 Episodes 20 Discs

Rush is an Australian television police drama that first screened on Network Ten in September 2008.[1] Set in Melbourne, Victoria it focuses on the members of a Police Tactical Response team. It is produced by John Edwards and Endemol Australia, which was branded as the Southern Star Group during production of the series.

Rush follows the lives of members of the prestigious Tactical Response team (TR), which is based on the real life Victoria Police Critical Incident Response Team, a highly mobile unit that fills the operational gap between general duties police and the SWAT-like Special Operations Group. The team is seen responding to violent incidents such as car jackings, suicides and armed offences. Rush focuses on the TR officers, their intelligence officer, Leon Broznic and Superindendent Kerry Vincent, head of the TR administration. It explores both the working and personal lives of the team.

Most of the episodes involve at least one main plot, with one or two smaller subplots throughout each episode. In some cases, they will focus on one plot, while the personal lives tend to fall into the form of smaller subplots that span over a number of episodes. Usually the team is divided into two, one team per case, with the team taking the minor subplot meeting up with the major team at some stage throughout the episode. The usual six-person team is split between two vehicles known as TR01 and TR02.

The Agency 2 seasons

Details

The show was controversial regarding its exploration of current international affairs and its treatment of the ethical conflicts inherent in intelligence work. Beckner's pilot script, written in March 2001, posited a re-invented CIA tasked with a "War on Terror" after Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda terrorist organization plots a lethal attack on the west. The pilot was to premiere at CIA Headquarters on September 18, 2001, and set to air on CBS September 21, 2001; however, the actual 9/11 attacks convinced the network to hold the pilot and instead air a later episode. That first episode was broadcast later as the third episode of the first season.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist events changed the way Americans viewed topical entertainment and "The Agency", at the time, was one of the most topical offerings on network television. The producers of the series quickly responded to this new American perspective on world affairs, but CBS canceled the show shortly after the second season's final episode. 44 episodes 44 Episodes

The Anzac Girls Season 1 Australian Series True Story

Details

ANZAC Girls is an Australian television drama series The six-part series is based on the rarely told true stories of nurses serving at Gallipoli and the Western Front during World War 1.[1] It is based on the book "The Other Anzac" as well as from diaries, letters, photographs and historical achievements. 3 discs 6 episodes.

"Adventure"

The nurses arrive from Australia to Egypt. Each are prepared for a grand adventure, although some seem to have ideas other than nursing on their minds. However, as the Gallipoli Campaign begins in earnest, all of them must face the harsh reality of war, and of what it means to be an ANZAC Nurse.

"Duty"

Olive and the others begin their work on the Greek Island of Lemnos, caring for the wounded who arrive from the Dardanelles with limited supplies and support from the Australian Army. Elsie fights to be able to provide proper care for Syd in Egypt.

"Endurance"

The situation in Lemnos grows darker, as Olive and the others struggle to continue their work in disheartening circumstances. Elsie is faced with a difficult choice when it comes to her continued care of Syd, and Alice also has a choice to make in matters of the heart.

"Love"

After the Gallipoli evacuation, the Lemnos nurses have returned, but all the nurses are then sent to France as fighting on the Western Front intensifies. There is prejudice from the British Imperial Nurses to contend with, the first anniversary of ANZAC Day, and Olive begins to question her relationship with Dooley. Alice receives shocking news from the Front.

"Mateship"

Alice struggles to comprehend the news she receives in the wake of an Allied assault in Fromelles. Olive's work at the clearing station brings matters of death, love, and duty to a head. Hilda and a handful of nurses are given the opportunity to work in anaesthetisation, and the arrival of the Croix Rouge leads to the return of a familiar face as another is farewelled.

"Courage"

Alice and Hilda start work at a clearing station close to the Front, and Elsie follows Syd to the Front. Tensions run high as the final push begins, and our nurses face new dangers. But finally, the Great War reaches its close as Armistice is declared, and we discover what became of our ANZAC Girls.

"Anzac Girls": Georgia Flood stars in a show available online on Acorn.tv starting Monday based on the true stories of five nurses in World War I.

If you enjoy the chipper British nurses of “Call the Midwife” or the earnest Canadian munitions workers of “Bomb Girls” — but you wish those shows provided more in the way of gaping wounds and deadly infectious disease — then you might want to check out “Anzac Girls.”

This six-episode Australian mini-series, available online beginning on Monday at Acorn.tv, is based on the real-life stories of five women who served in the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War I. It’s a soap opera but a focused one. The action begins as the nurses arrive in Cairo in 1915, with no time wasted on family back stories or tearful goodbyes.

And through the first two episodes, it continues to move right along, taking the general shape of an old-fashioned war film. An early, not-too-bloody sojourn at the Suez Canal is the aperitif before the ghastly main course of Gallipoli. The battle itself takes place in the distance, but the screen is filled with its toll: the blasted bodies of Australian and New Zealand soldiers caught in a months long stalemate with the Ottoman army.

The crew of nurses is quickly split up, and “Anzac Girls” becomes a show with three fronts — a field hospital of tents and horrifying privies on a bleak island off the Turkish coast, a medical ship just offshore and a hospital in the calm of Cairo. Through the eyes of these young women who had never been overseas before, we get a crash course in the senselessness of the Gallipoli campaign, the desire of the colonial nations to assert themselves, the prevalence of venereal disease in a war zone and much more. And, of course, the dangers of being around sex-starved soldiers.

Among coming-of-age melodramas, “Anzac Girls” is at the glossy, sweeping, high-class end of the spectrum, which means it has its tedious and preachy stretches, and it doesn’t work as hard to charm you as “Call the Midwife.” But it can be moving, particularly in scenes involving Georgia Flood as the levelheaded, proto-liberated nurse Alice. When Alice walks into a ward filled in an instant with wounded men, Ms. Flood’s eyes transmit horror and courage far more eloquently than the script.

The Brokenwood Mysteries New Zealand Seasons 1 and 2

Details

Both Seasons 1 and 2.

So why should New Zealand be denied the fun? Hence we get "The Brokenwood Mysteries," which focuses on a pleasant little down in the land of the long white cloud that just happens to have a number of mysterious corpses. While the first season of this series isn't dramatically different from other shows like "Midsomer Murders," it has a pleasantly languid air and a quirky side that sets it apart.

In "Blood and Water," Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) is sent to the rural town of Brokenwood to investigate an alcoholic farmer found dead in the river. Since the dead man was commonly considered to be an abusive beast who probably murdered his own wife, everyone assumes that he simply committed suicide... but Shepherd isn't convinced. As he digs deeper into the town's ugly little secrets, he discovers that both murders -- and the victim himself -- are not what they appear to be.

In "Sour Grapes," the annual Brokenwood wine contest hits a sour note when one of the judges is drowned in a vat of wine. The immediate suspect is a brilliant but socially inept woman whose wine inexplicably didn't win the competition, but Mike quickly sniffs out a bunch of other desperate competitors who might have wanted this judge dead -- debt, sex and prestige being just a few of the motives -- and a merry-go-round of suspect vintages.

In "Playing the Lie," the local golf committee stumbles across the body of one of their own -- Adele Stone, a cutthroat cougar who angered everyone who knew her, including the rest of the committee and her own sullen daughter. So there are no shortage of suspects for Mike to sift through, as he tries to deal with a "Clubhouse Bandit," an illegal weed-killer, and the possibility that the world's least exciting major sport could have driven someone to murder.

And finally, "Hunting the Stag" when a literal stag trip ends in murder when the potential groom is found shot dead through the head. It seems like a tragic accident, but all three of his friends had discharged their rifles with nothing to show for it -- and they insist they didn't kill him. Furthermore, the bride doesn't seem as grief-stricken as she should be. Mike suspects that something darker is at play, and must figure out the killer's identity before someone else dies.

One thing I've come to expect from movies and TV out of New Zealand is a kind of quirky edge that you don't find from most other countries. And while it's sublimated to murder in "The Brokenwood Mysteries," it's definitely there -- Mike'sT country music and tendency to talk to the dead bodies, the eccentric Russian forensics lady, and the cheery Maori jack-of-trades living next door to Mike. Oh, and did I mention that Mike's new house has a vineyard? For no real reason?

Don't worry, the crimes are still treated with seriousness -- each episode has a fairly brutal murder, leaving behind a string of seemingly unconnected clues that eventually prove that the obvious answer isn't the right one. Wrong wine, gun ballistics, odd pieces of clothing. There's also a running subplot about a mysterious woman who is hiding in Brokenwood, and whom Mike somehow knows.

In short, it has much the same whodunnit rhythms as many other mystery shows, especially ones from the United Kingdom, but it has a humorous edge ("You are aware she's in an aeroplane? "Yeah, but just a small one!") and a more languid, laid-back pace. It also makes New Zealand look pretty pleasant -- lushly green, with mist-wrapped forests and little farms, sunlit and sometimes redolent with recent rain, with white-painted buildings on either side of wide roads.

Mike Shepherd also makes for a pretty likable protagonist -- an unshaven cop who goes with his gut, listens to cassettes of country music, talks casually to corpses and claims to have an unknown number of ex-wives (only one has been confirmed). And while wheels are always turning in his head, Rea's mellow performance gives him the sense of great clarity -- he doesn't let himself be swayed in his estimations by a person's job, their reputation or their abilities.

While Sims can be irritatingly grumpy at times, Fern Sutherland makes a solid conventional foil for Rea's unshaven maverick; Pana Hema Taylor makes a fun neighbor who wanders over to offer beer and a smile. He does border on a deus ex machina at times, though -- he always seems to know someone or have bits of expertise relevant to the cast.

Country music and country murders litter "The Brokenwood Mysteries Series 1," which takes the small-town mystery model and shifts it down to New Zealand. A pleasant if not groundbreaking little show.

This series chronicles the events surrounding the activities of the Royal Flying Doctors Service, which operates its own aircraft -in this case from the base at Coopers Crossing, an otherwise hardly notable town- to fly its medical staff throughout the Australian outback, where roads are too scarce and distances too immense to reach patients for medical care or get them to hospital by car in time. Doctors, nurses, pilots and base staff change throughout the seasons, often coming from the city and finding it difficult to adapt to life in the godforsaken countryside and be accepted by the isolated local community; there are of course the usual colleague stories. In most episodes they make one or more flights for routine medical examination sessions and/or emergency help, sometimes continued on board and/or in the hospital. Furthermore there are various sidelines, mainly concerning the local characters such as bar-owners Vic and Nancy, who also provide the only rooms, and some of their regulars, including local shopkeeper and busybody Violet Carnegie and arrogant richest businessman George Baxter who are very influential in the indispensable fund-raising. 73 Discs.

Time Of Our Lives Australian Series 1 & 2

Details

The show revolves around the extended Tivolli family – Ray (Tony Barry), his wife Rosa (Sue Jones), and their three children Matt (William McInnes), Luce (Shane Jacobson), and Chai Li (Melissa Vergara Moore). Matt, the eldest, is in a moribund marriage with Caroline (Claudia Karvan), a capable lawyer who has suspended her career to raise their son, Carmody, with forensic intensity and misguided determination.

Her unrealistic approach to motherhood fuses guilt with innocence and hope with determined rectitude. Consequently the couple's relationship, with its sustaining veneer of comfortable achievement, has become an illusion. A house divided.

In sharp contrast is the united front evident in the household of Matt's younger brother Luce who, after divorcing Maryanne, has started over with Bernadatte (Justine Clark). They have twin daughters and share custody of 12 year-old Georgie from Luce's previous union.

The couple's easygoing outlook doesn't exempt them from a maelstrom of crises – major and minor – all-too familiar to viewers who have followed the recent trials and tribulations of Channel nine's House Husbands. Bernadette and Luce cope with things as they happen rather than fall back on control mechanisms, excuses or simplistic Alpha determinants.

The brothers' younger sister, Chai Li, was adopted by Ray and Rosa in 1975 during Operation Babylift . She is hardly an adjunct to the Tivolli clan yet despite the love and inclusion she enjoys the 30-something lacks control of her destiny. She is also acts as a surrogate sister to Herb (Stephen Curry), a lifelong mate of Luce's who has been "semi-adopted" by the Tivollis as a consequence of his mother's chronic alcoholism. Likeable, warm and intuitive Herb is emotionally guarded, keeping security and happiness – or contentment – just out of reach.

And here is the pivotal paradox of the series. The fundamental concepts we readily appreciate and desire can be difficult to attain when choice is perhaps overabundant.

Instant alienation and immediate acceptance are too often offered by stereotypical characters of the kind so readily found in interminable American dramas that tend to screen in the early afternoon. The Time Of Our Lives is light years away from Days Of Our Lives. Oblique intrigue and engaging possibilities emerge from the ABC drama's contradictions. The prospect of things not being as they initially appear offers engagement for an audience and greater potential for commitment to the drama. Fair enough, too! We are fairly sophisticated in the language of the screen these days and more likely to take our prompts from long experience – not just cliche. The finesse with which The Time Of Our Lives has been crafted makes it intriguing and user-friendly – the bleeding obvious is not a determinant here. After the emotional vortex created by Chai Li's aborted wedding with Joel (where were his family?) an array of fracture lines is appearing.

The structure of the Tivolli clan is being tested by subtle shifts of focus. The family is hardly a crumbling edifice of false hopes, guilty secrets and fibs, but group stability and individual happiness are frequently governed by subliminal frictions that come as much from aspiration for contentment as an inability to appreciate its worth when overt emotions collide. The supplementary paradox of The Time Of Our Lives involves the chaos we create for ourselves in trying to avert chaos. Unlike the seamless, daydream perfection of correct consumer choices, the symbiotics of romance and friendship, duty and loyalty, respect and gratitude contribute to changing definitions of happy families. A terrific script deserves astute casting and confident directors. The Time Of Our Lives has both - plus characters who could well have been written for the actors who play them. The long-form, episodic structure enjoys a fluency reminiscent of The Slap by revealing individuals from multiple, kaleidoscopic viewpoints. This is the real deal. Quality drama with genuine heart and integrity reminding us by its excellence how others in the same ambit – for all their popularity and likeability – fall short. 11 Discs

We Of The Never Never

Details

The film focusses on the life of Jeannie, a woman from the upper classes of society, and her story of adapting to life in the outback of Australia. Following her marriage to Aeneas Gunn who has just bought a 1 million acre cattle station near Mataranka, called Elsey Station, Jeannie follows him from Melbourne in 1902. Some of the drovers were unhappy at first because they believed that the bush is no place for a white woman. As such, they were both wary of her and made fun of her when both her and her husband arrived. However, Jeannie was determined to prove them wrong. While her husband was away with the other men herding the cattle, Jeannie begins making friends with the Aboriginal people. Her husband and the other white men treated the local people (and Chinese workers) as inferior to them, often regarding them as lazy, indifferent, and unreliable. Jeannie however is sympathetic, often giving them food, or trying to stop domestic disputes.

When We Go To War (New Zealand)mini-series

Details

When We Go To War focuses on the impact the war has on a middle New Zealand, Pakeha family and a Maori brother and sister. When We Go To War is a historical saga, that tells the story of six young men and women, who, in 1914 on the eve of World War I, are full of plans and dreams for the future.

Raised in the early years of a brave new century, they are a generation feeling that almost anything is possible. But their lives are changed forever as New Zealand enters the Great War.

Beginning a few weeks before the outbreak of war in August 1914, this epic mini-series follows the landing at Gallipoli in April 1915, the disastrous assault on Chunik Bair and eventual evacuation of Gallipoli in December 1915-through the eyes of New Zealand soldiers, officers, medical staff and family back home!

This spectacular six-hour television drama cuts between life at home, Gallipoli and Egypt. The series begins in a time of optimism and hope, on the eve of war. New Zealand has one of the highest living standards in the world, is part of the mighty British Empire and few can foresee the horrors soon to come.

As the series - and the war - progress, the changing lives of those back home are contrasted with the experiences of New Zealand soldiers in the trenches and the lives of nurses in makeshift hospitals in Egypt. The war puts an enormous strain on existing relationships - while new ones develop.

The story centres around a powerful and conflicted love story between Bea Smith, a woman ahead of her time who is nursing in Egypt alongside her lover William, a dedicated doctor. The series also explores the effect the battlefield has on Charles Smith, a lawyer turned officer, his brother Harry, the family's black sheep, and family friend Manaaki Kokiri, a preacher turned lethally effective soldier. The effects of war at home cover the grief of the bereaved, anti-German hatred, anti-conscription activism and the survival of the family's economic base, Smith's Emporium. 2 discs 6 episodes
