Season 1

From the creator (Bevan Lee) of Packed to the Rafters, Always Greener and Winners & Losers comes A Place to Call Home. Set in Australia in the 1950s, it's a compelling and romantic story of one woman's journey to heal her soul and of a privileged family rocked by scandal.

Acclaimed actress Marta Dusseldorp leads the cast as Sarah Adams, a woman with a mysterious past who returns to Australia after 20 years in Europe. Working her passage home aboard an ocean liner, Sarah becomes involved in the lives of the Blighs, a wealthy Australian pastoralist family. She develops an immediate connection with handsome and charming widower George (Brett Climo), as well as his modern young daughter Anna (Abby Earl) and withdrawn daughter-in-law Olivia (Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood). But it is when Sarah unwittingly discovers a potentially scandalous Bligh family secret that her future becomes forever linked with theirs. Only the uncompromising matriarch of the family, Elizabeth (Noni Hazlehurst), and her grandson James (David Berry), know Sarah has uncovered this family skeleton. All The Rivers Run Series 2 Sequel

Details

This sequel to the Australian miniseries All the Rivers Run takes place in 1903, as Brenton Edwards (John Waters) continues to pilot the Philadelphia Riverboat around Echuca, one of the biggest port cities in Australia. Edwards makes the acquaintance of Cyrus James (Parker Stevenson), an American relocated to Australia, and soon James becomes his partner in the riverboat business. However, not all goes well for them; after shipping and tourism in Echuca goes into a downturn, Edwards is sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit, and James rallies to keep their business afloat and Brenton's family together as they all search for a way to prove Edwards is innocent. All the Rivers Run 2 was also released in the United States as The Rivers Run: A Journey of Faith and Hope; leading man John Waters is an Australian actor best known for his role in the film Breaker Morant, and is not to be confused with the eccentric American filmmaker of the same name.

Banished BBC Series 1

Details

Set in the first penal colony founded by the British in New South Wales in the year 1788, in which the British convicts live alongside their Royal Navy marine guards and their officers. A thousand prisoners are guarded by one hundred men, and with five men for every woman, tensions are high when the women are shared among the men.

1

"Episode 1"

When prisoner Elizabeth Quinn is found in the men's quarters, the rules of the penal colony are tested. The female prisoners are expected to fraternize only with the soldiers and not other prisoners unless they are married; an impossible situation because she and her lover, Tommy Barrett, have spouses back in England. Governor Phillip, to maintain order, agrees to have Barrett hanged and gives the task to Reverend Johnson who will not marry them as he does not sanction the Governor's legal power to divorce the pair.

2

"Episode 2"

Starving James Freeman plots with Tommy Barrett and Elizabeth Quinn to kill the blacksmith to steal his food. The plot goes awry, forcing Barrett to kill the blacksmith in the sleeping quarters before witnesses. The witnesses agree to stay silent. With the body disposed of the Governor cannot hang anybody even though he suspects Freeman. Kitty McVitie, a prisoner who has a protector and lover in Private MacDonald, catches the eye of Major Ross and he offers the Private promotion to Corporal and extra food in exchange for sex with McVitie for two nights a week; with no alternative they agree, but the intervention of the Reverend Johnson meant that the relationship must be platonic.

3

"Episode 3"

Stubbins volunteers to be the new blacksmith to gain remission on his sentence and is being taught to read and write to the consternation of the colony letter writer Letters Molloy. Elizabeth and Barrett's blessing of marriage by the Reverend Johnson at the site of his proposed church is halted by her sickness caused by her pregnancy. The Governor also calls a halt to the building of the church. Major Ross's demands on Kitty McVitie that she should spend three nights a week with him prove too much and in her desire to kill herself the blacksmith's body is discovered; James Freeman flees into the bush.

4

"Episode 4"

McVitie is threatened with a hundred lashes by Major Ross, who takes her suicide attempt as an insult; but intervention by the Reverend Johnson leads to a compromise satisfactory to Ross's desires and the restart of the church construction. Mrs Johnson is given hope for the future by the insight of Anne Meredith. Freeman returns to the colony after a run-in with an escaped prisoner who was thought to be dead, Jefferson. Freeman is sentenced to be hanged and the Governor unsuccessfully canvasses the prisoners for a hangman; finding no volunteer, the Governor has to do it himself, and with Freeman in the noose on the scaffold, offers him a way out.

5

"Episode 5"

The prisoners' suspicions are aroused by Freeman's escape from the hangman's noose, believing he has turned informer; punishable by death at the hands of the prisoners. Major Ross's batman, Mulrooney, is killed by a poisonous snake and Ross uses the death to try to drive a wedge between Kitty McVitie and Corporal MacDonald. A poker game between Timmins, Macdonald, Buckley, Freeman, and Barrett turns nasty when Barrett uses his wife, Elizabeth, as a stake and a truth is revealed about Buckley and Elizabeth.

6

"Episode 6"

Barrett goes berserk and finds Buckley and beats him to near death, placing the governor Phillip in a dilemma with Major Ross demanding Barrett be hanged and the Reverend Johnson pleading leniency. With food supplies dwindling, Ross proposes withdrawing food from the dying and feeding the corpses to the prisoners so that his soldiers can remain fed. Ross convinces Sergeant Timmins that in the event that the Governor should not sentence Barrett to death, then Timmins should arrest the governor. The governor decides to sentence Barrett to death and allows Barrett and his companions to get drunk. Ross's plan to break up McVitie and MacDonald come to fruition when she agrees to having sex with him. Freeman, knowing he will be the hangman and will be killed by the other prisoners, goes to the scaffold and puts the noose around his own neck.

7

"Episode 7"

Kitty McVitie agrees to live with Major Ross despite MacDonald imploring her to marry him. Mrs Johnson enquires if she can take Anne Meredith home to England when she and her husband return, but the truth behind her transportation threatens their friendship. At the hanging of Tommy Barrett, the convicts' plan to turn their backs is thwarted by Major Ross's intervention using MacDonald to kill any prisoner refusing to watch. The governor orders Freeman to do his duty and orders Private Buckley to act as Freeman's bodyguard on pain of his own death. Governor Phillip uses the defiance of the convicts to cut the dwindling rations. 4 Discs

Blue Heelers Complete Australia Series 13 Seasons 510 Episodes

Details

Blue Heelers is a character-based drama about coppers in a country town. The young team of police are the focus of the stories, the impact of events on each of them and their loved ones are the heart of the series. We watch their successes and their failures and learn to grow with them. The series is the one of Australia's most successful and long running dramas with 510 episodes produced over 13 series. 49 Discs "Blue Heelers" continues the rich Australian tradition of flourishing police dramas set around the lives of people living in the bush. In a clever plot turn, the police officers at Mt. Thomas have been largely recruited from the city, where, in a classic "city slickers" set piece, their perceptions are challenged by the alien (but very moral) values of the bush. Actions speak louder than words in the country backblocks of "Blue Heelers", where the law is more likely to be applied in the straightforward manner of the residents. And as any lawyer will tell you, magistrates in the country are not like their fellow judiciary in the city, sometimes ruling more by decree than recognizable rules of evidence. No doubt this is part of the vast appeal of "Blue Heelers" - in the city we often wish that justice was dispensed quickly and without fuss. And in this show the country folk are not backwards in coming forward when they don’t agree with the local coppers. It’s one thing to deal with an anonymous customer - it’s altogether different when you’re likely to meet up with the same person at the local over a beer! This is the contemporary Australian cousin of "Heartbeat". There’s also a substantial element of the "old dog/new dog" about this show. Sgt. Tom Croydon (actor John Wood) has well and truly marked his territory - the rookies are here to challenge his methods and values - sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re wrong. The Sarge could not be called a liberal - Wood himself has described his character as a bit of a reactionary. Whether it’s Mr. Smith going to Washington or the New Yorkers mixing it with the yokels in "Green Acres", this is a tried and true formula - thankfully over its many hundreds of episodes it has proved not to be "tired" and true. This isn’t to say that "Blue Heelers" just plays it safe, but they’re certainly treading a well-worn path to ratings success. Play the opposites off against each other and watch the sparks fly, on the screen and in our lounge rooms! Check out how Tom hates the way PJ bends the rules to suit himself, and how he’s nearly sent the younger man back to where he came from to pay for his sins.

Like most police dramas we have reviewed at Law4u, "Blue Heelers" focuses on the lives of a close knit group of coppers, both in and out of the police station (or "the house" as it’s known in the trade). And where better to look at the lives of a cozy group than in a country town where everyone already knows everybody else’s business? So let’s take a look at the fictitious town of Mt. Thomas.

Where is it set?

With a population of about 10,000, Mt. Thomas is your average medium sized Australian town: large enough to generate a few seasons’ worth of crimes and pub-addicted characters, but small enough to encourage the intimacy that pervades the show’s consciousness. In this way Mt. Thomas is similar to Rome, Wisconsin, the small/medium town in which the late lamented "Picket Fences" was set (though the characters of "Picket Fences" tended to the extremes of eccentricity - remember the Potato Man?).

The town is the commercial center for the farmers in the area, and as we all know, farmers are straight talkers who don’t take to the city values they’ve deliberately avoided. This is not to say that there is no contact with the outside world - after all, there’s serious revenue (and plot lines) in the passing parade of no-good city slickers who travel the highway that runs past the town (we’d like to write "past the mountain", but we’re not too sure it’s really a mountain at all!). And like any self-respecting Australian town, there’s a feud of sorts with the neighboring town (St. Davids), often settled (in the grand Australian tradition) of footy and cricket matches. It’s not like a real country town, of course – it’s a television town, where morality reigns and goodness triumphs over evil. What the heck!

Bordertown Australian Mini with Cate Blanchett

Details

To the outside, Baringa appears bleak and remote: a converted army barracks in a dusty, isolated region of Australia, miles from the sea. It is hardly the place you would pick to start a new life, but for its inhabitants, it's where their dreams begin (and sometimes crumble). Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Robin Hood) guest stars in this touching series set within a fictional migrant camp in post-war Australia. Bordertown is a moving (and often comic) look at the lives, hopes and memories of one transient group of dreamers.

The rough Australian landscape and lack of luxuries cannot deter the temporary inhabitants of Baringa. They flock there from Italy, the Netherlands, England and beyond to gain a foothold on a new existence. Among their number are craftsmen, tormented lovers, rigid military types and drifters with a criminal past. Their languages and goals may differ, but this diverse population is united in their hopes of a fresh start, a break that will finally change their luck.

In the engrossing tales of love, death, money and life among these starry-eyed immigrants, you too will experience the magic and mystery of Bordertown. 5 Discs

Eye Of The Storm

Details

Austrailian multiple award winning movie. It's the story of a rich, egocentric old matriarch, Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) and her two expatriate children, Sir Basil (Geoffrey Rush), an actor living in London, and daughter Dorothy (Judy Davis), a divorced French princess living in Paris, who returns to inherit her wealth. Both are in need of money and in thrall to the famous "cultural cringe" that has made all things British and European seem superior to their own culture. Neither will ever get over the way this beautiful, cold, promiscuous woman has denied them her love and constantly humiliated them. Shakespeare's King Lear (one of Sir Basil's key roles) hangs over the film, and in one of the numerous flashbacks Elizabeth has an epiphany that echoes the storm scene in Lear. It's a chilly, cruel film about characters that are difficult to like or warm to, and it obviously means a great deal to a country that for so long rejected its greatest writer. The performances are excellent and it's photographed with great sensitivity by Ian Baker who has lit all but one of Schepisi's films since his debut with The Devil's Playground in 1976. Elizabeth Hunter controls all in her life - society, her staff, her children; but the once great beauty will now determine her most defiant act as she chooses her time to die.

Murray Whelan Australian Series #1 Stiff

Details

ingle father Murray Whelan thinks the life of a parent and political operative is complicated enough. His ex is staking out the moral high ground for a custody battle, and rumors of an early election are starting to fly in the upper echelons of Australia's Labor party. When a Turk is found snap-frozen in a local meat plant, Murray cops the job to head off possible fallout for his boss, Charlene Wills, a member of Parliament and the Minister for Industry. But the meat industry smells decidedly fishy when Murray starts asking too many questions. Suddenly things are spinning fatally out of control as he finds himself the object of an elaborate intimidation plot: drugs planted under the bed, fascist funeral rites, a killer car, and bloodsucking parasites. That's when red-hot Ayisha, the Turkish Welfare League's answer to activism, knocks on his door.

Stiff brings back the wisecracking ace of reluctant detectives in a mystery that is fast, furious, and very, very funny.

In Stiff, Whelan is estranged from his high-flying wife, but takes some comfort in his young son, Red, during whose visits murder ensues, houses collapse and everything is enveloped in drollery which nonetheless has time to encompass the celebration of the marvellous Melbourne, which, as Shane Maloney once remarked, is the preordained capital in this country of white-collar crime.

Maloney is not insensitive to his luck in being adapted by his friend John Clarke. "John is a man who reinvents everything he touches. He sends up politicians without ever impersonating them. He presents the organisation of the Games and makes it worse than we could ever have expected. He's not someone who'll settle for the relentlessly plot-driven puzzle."

Certainly not. Clarke has directed Stiff with a deep empathy for Maloney's free association around the detective story form in a style as minimalist as the style of his TV show The Games, and with Wenham's luminously poker-faced Murray Whelan as the centre of the story's consciousness (as he must be).

Clarke was conscious that, in the absence of Murray Whelan's narrating voice, there was only the camera. "If he doesn't say it, the camera must," he says. Clarke likes the "socio-archaeological" aspect of the Murray Whelan stories, the social observation and the texture of society as he perceives it, and here he thinks David Wenham was his greatest asset.

Murray Whelan Australian Series #2 The Brushoff

Details

Murray Whelan Series Australian 2nd episode The Brushoff

This, the second of the Murray Whelan acdmms, follows the same successful formula as the first. Murray Whelan is an untidy but lovable guy, who stumbles his way through the world trying to serve his masters and love his son, with mixed success. About half way through the movie my wife made the very perceptive comment that everyone so far was playing an idiot; and in a perverse way, that's what makes the humour, even though we wouldn't normally laugh at an idiot per se.

The plot is about art fraud. Not that that is relevant to anything, other than it allows Bruce Spence to play either a gay or merely very foppish role, which he clearly does with great relish.

This is the sort of movie that experienced actors such as Spence, Steve Bisley, Mick Malloy and John Clarke can play in their sleep, and possibly do. It'll never be considered a classic movie, but then again, there is no expectation that it would be. One of the secrets of Paul Hogan's success was that he didn't flood our TV screens with his show, and this movie is equally coy. It's only the second Murray Whelan this year, and one every six months does indeed seem to be the right amount. This would never form the basis of a weekly comedy show, and wisely, it is apparently not going to become such. Many of the gags are telegraphed well in advance (eg, the characters that Murray meets in the elevator), as in often the case with John Clarke, but that doesn't take away from their punch.

Sam Neill is listed as director, and he did a good job. I would have liked to have seen him in the movie as well. And by the way, the acdmm quote in the Summary above is from the TV station promo when John C and Sam N were discussing what these movies would be.

In summary, a good movie to see and enjoy once, delivering exactly what it promises.

The eight-part series follows the adventures of the retired criminal Lennie Cahill and the retired cop Ted McCabe.

The series opens with a flashback to the heist, which turns into a shoot-out between the robbers and the police. Ted is shot but survives; Lennie, who does not fire a shot, is the only member of the gang arrested.

A dozen years later, Lennie is released from prison, and pensioned-off Ted is waiting for him. The men are not friends, but agree to co-operate in their mutual interests. Ted wants to find out who shot him; Lennie, seemingly the only gang member not to have died in suspicious circumstances in the intervening years, wants to find out what really happened that day, and just maybe still collect his never-delivered share of the loot, a crisp $300,000.

It’s an odd-couple set-up that could turn into a buddy movie cliche, but Jordan, the writers and the two stars deliver something more profound. Like the BBC crime-comedy series New Tricks, Old School is at least in part a lesson, in our youth-centric culture, about elderly dogs having life in them yet. It’s also entertaining and funny. When Lennie queries being charged $1000 for an illegal gun delivered in a brown paper bag — “It’s a basic sandwich, not even a gourmet one” — the reply is: “That’s Sydney.’’ 2 discs DVD-R Region Free.
